Mixed Media Butterflies for Die Cut Divas

 Hello crafty friends! Today I’m sharing my sample card for Die Cut Divas, where our June challenge theme is Anything Goes. Although we don’t have an official sponsor this month, we do still have a prize: one of our Divas won a $25 gift card to Whimsy Stamps and has generously chosen to pass it on. The gift card will be awarded by random draw from eligible June entries.

For my card, I created a mixed media background and paired it with layered butterfly die cuts. The butterflies were cut using Montie’s Craft Supplies Layered Butterflies from a piece of bubble watercolour card that had not quite worked out. Happily, it turned out to be perfect for these little cuties. I added Silver Lining Lunar Paste over the smaller layered pieces to give them a lovely shimmer and extra dimension.

To create the main panel, I first primed the surface with clear gesso, which gave the card a beautiful “tooth” and made it ideal for adding layers. I then “watercoloured” some Altenew Leaves by colouring directly over the stamp with watercolour brushes, spritzing it with water, and stamping the image onto the panel.

Once the leaves had dried, I used a Dina Wakley mini stencil to add brick details with Catherine Pooler brown ink. I also stamped randomly with a Hero Arts scripty stamp to build up more texture and interest in the background. After everything was completely dry, I added the butterflies and the sentiment strips, which I printed on my computer.

To finish the card, I added splatters of white Dina Wakley acrylic paint. I love how the soft watercolour, stenciled texture, script stamping, and shimmery butterflies all came together for a layered mixed media look.

Craft Roulette #322: A 1970s-Inspired Postcard Card

It’s my second week in a row joining in with Craft Roulette, and I’m really enjoying the challenge. I watched the replay on Sunday and immediately felt inspired by the parameters the wheel spun this week.

As soon as I saw the challenge, I knew exactly which stamp I wanted to use: the Hero Arts Big Postcard woodblock stamp. I’ve had this stamp in my stash for such a long time, so it felt good to pull it out and give it some love again.

For the colour palette, I searched for 1970s colours and found plenty of inspiration in warm, earthy tones. I settled on browns, burnt orange, maroon, and avocado green — such a classic retro combination.

The card came together really well. I embossed a kraft-coloured panel with Altenew’s Organic folder, which added the texture I wanted and worked perfectly with the 70s feel. I then used the Simon Says Stamp Circle Loops die to cut a kraft circle for the wreath. The flowers and leaves were cut from different coloured cardstock using the Sizzix Spring Foliage set, and I added Copper Penny and Rhubarb Crumble Nuvo Drops for a little extra detail. For the pre-printed element, I used a sentiment from Paper Rose.

I actually finished the card on Tuesday, but Wednesday threw me a bit of a curve ball, so I didn’t get a chance to photograph and submit it until this morning. I’m glad I still managed to get it entered — and even happier to have another much-loved stamp back in use.

Just for You: A Blue-Themed Farewell Card

 

Last week, one of the ladies at my hubby’s workplace was heading off to a new job, and I was asked to create a handmade card for her send‑off. I wanted something thoughtful and elegant, so I settled on a simple but heartfelt theme: Just a note… to say you will be missed.

I chose a blue colour palette for this card. To start, I used some beautiful watercolour‑style patterned paper from Scrapbook.com. I die‑cut an arch from the paper and created a coordinating frame, then embossed it with a woodgrain folder to add subtle texture and interest. This was mounted onto a crisp white card base, letting the blue tones really shine.

For the focal point, I chose the Altenew Petite Mountain Aven dies. I cut three sets of the florals and blended Persian Blue ink over them to build depth and variation in the colour. A small touch of yellow in the centres brought the flowers to life and added just the right amount of contrast.

I added delicate gold leaves cut from the Sizzix Geo Floral Frame die set. The metallic accents worked beautifully with the blue palette and added a hint of elegance without overwhelming the card.

The sentiment was created using the Altenew Scripty Sentiments die, cut from a dark blue cardstock to tie everything together. To finish, I scattered a few small gold dots around the design for a subtle sparkle.

This card was fun to make and a lovely way to say goodbye while wishing someone well on their next adventure.

I started this card with a gorgeous pack of two-sided patterned paper from the Scrapbook.com Watercoloured Collection. One side features a soft, pale pink, while the reverse is a deeper rosy shade. I trimmed the lighter side to create the main panel, then stamped florals from the Hero Arts Delicate Blossoms stamp set (now retired) onto both patterns.

To add a little extra depth, I shaded the images with a red marker before fussy cutting the darker blooms and paper piecing them into place. Added a dark pink mat.  For the sentiment, I die cut a silver “hello” using the Altenew All About You dies and paired it with a stamped “friend” from the Hero Arts Hello There set. A scattering of silver die-cut dots finished the card for a touch of shine.

I started by white embossing Hero Arts Cling Heart Pattern Background stamp (circa 2016 - retired) and then using some Distress Oxide Picked Raspberry to blend all over the embossed hearts.  I used a Gina K Master Layout 2 to die cut the panel and a white matting layer.  I took the DO ink and did a ink pad to paper to colour my card base.  The love you heart is another retired Hero Arts set - Stamp & Cut Yes. (circa 2014) stamped and clear embossed with the DO Picked Raspberry ink and cut with the co-ordinating die.  The ribbon is a Poppy Stamps die called Grosgrain Ribbon.  Added some white and Rose cold foliage from Altenew's Branches and Berries.

Time Out challenge #306- Sparkle, Red, Heart and Twine.

 Today I was scrolling through my blog feed and saw the Time Out Challenge.   I entered recently and was super excited to see my card (here) had won challenge #305.   And checked out challenge #360.  It was perfect for what was sitting on my desk.  I had been working on my DT card for Die Cut Divas where out challenge is Red/Pink.   

Lots of choices for this one....  I chose Red, Sparkle, Heart and Twine!  I had a Hero Arts Background Cling sitting on my desk and some WOW Clear Sparkle Embossing powder.  Red card was close at hand...

The Hero Arts Leafy Vines (2012 - retired) looks amazing in real life - the embossing powder sparkles and shines in a variety of colours as you tilt the card.   So hard to photograph!  I got out an older Spellbinders die set - Lace Hearts.  Included in the set is the gorgeous key.  Cut it from some textured rose gold card and tie a twine bow.  Created the sentiment on my computer and printed it then die cut with Altenew Featured Sentiments dies.  Added sparkle crystal gems.  

Woodblock Wednesday - January 2026

 I started this card yesterday but had to wait for the Glossy Accents to dry. 

I have used two Hero Arts woodblock stamps (retired) from 2009 and 2010 - Raindrop Background and Dogwood.   I have quite a few Hero Arts woodblock stamps as when I first started stamping they were my go to company.  Woodblock stamps were what you mostly purchased.

I started by stamping the Raindrop background in Catherine Pooler Eucalyptus ink and then stamped the Dogwood in a combination of the Eucalyptus and Green Tea.  I used Prismacolor pencils to add colour.  Then stamped in with CP Sweet Sixteen ink and again used some pencils before fussy cutting and piecing over the green flowers,   Added the sentiment from an Altenew stamp set (Silk Art) stamped in the Green Tea and fussy cut.  The glossy accents is on the green centres.  

It is always such fun to remember to pull out these stamps 

Crafting with Suna...

 I had a "play date" with my friend Suna on Friday afternoon... I had made a start to my crafting in the morning and then we had a fabulous time crafting and talking.   I got so busy crafting I forgot to take any pics of us playing.  

Earlier in the week, my order from Scrapbook.com had arrived.   Part of it was Pinkfresh Studio - Peony Glow stamp, die and washi tape.   I forgot the matching stencil ( but it is now on it's way!)  The washi is soooo beautiful and there is so much washi on the roll.   I added the washi to white card and vellum and cut them for Suna to take home. 

I made two cards on Friday using the washi on white card. 

This lot of die cut washi isn't even all of one panel!   For this one I made a background using an Altenew Cover Plate - Dotted Sunburst Debossing - for some lovely texture.   I then created the frame using a Gina L Master Layout 18 die.  Then I went to town adding the florals die cuts.   Had fun  putting it together.   Added a sentiment from the matching stamp set and it's shadow die layered 4 times for a really sturdy sentiment.   Finished with rose gold dots.  

My second card - used more of the panel of die cut washi

Again, I used the Altenew Starburst Debossing Cover plate for the background panel.   On top I layered a frame made with 2 of the Hero Arts Infinity Arches Dies.  I had embossed it with a wood grain folder.  I used the same card stock to cut and emboss the Altenew Pitcher Vases folder and die.   Added some brown ink from Altenew over the embossing.  Cut some Scrapbook.com watercolour patterned paper for the inside of frame.   I used a stipe of 3D tape down the middle to give it some dimension and shape.   Added the floral cluster from the first panel of washi die cuts.  Again, used a sentiment from the Pinkfresh Studio stamp set.  Finished with some more of the rose gold dots. 

And one more card I made in the afternoon... this one using a free digital image from Sande Woodson.  It was free on her Facebook page and is blue Christmas images 

I used the Hero Arts Infinity dies again to make a gold frame.  I cut a white panel to fit into the centre of the arch.   I used a Holly 3D embossing folder to add texture.  The sentiment is from Rosies Studio - Hearth and Home stamp set and fitted perfectly in the top corner.  I had printed the sheet of blue Christmas images and used my Scan'N'Cut to cut them out.   I loved this little girl with her book.   Went perfectly with the rest of the card.  Finished with some dots cut from the same gold card. 

Thanks for taking the time to view my cards today.   I had so much fun playing with Suna.  It's great to spend crafting time with a friend.   Just loving have Friday's off now so I can do this sort of thing.  

I actually made a total of 7 cards on the day. So a very successful day.

More Christmas cards using the mixed media background.

 Well over the last few days, I've made up three more cards using some of the mixed media masterboard I made. 

I had used Gina K Master Layout 2 to cut the panel.  I then used some texture paste through a star stencil and sprinkled with some Diamond Dust glitter.  Matted it with the dark green card and added the gold die cut sentiment (minus the shadow layer) and some gold dots. 

Next I used a square panel of the background 

Matted the square panel with the dark green (looks black in my photo) and used a strip to add my red die cut sentiment.  Added some little red star embellishments.   A very quick card. 

And the last for today 

This panel was a smaller one cut with one of the dies and matting layer dies from Gina K Master Layouts 2.  The background panel is a white embossed panel (Christmas words) matted onto a white layer and added to the top folding dark green card base.   Added the panel to the base layers and then used a Hero Arts stamp and die set called Holly Jolly to make the leaves.  Used Catherine Pooler inks - Eucalyptus and Green Tea.   Stamped the sentiment from the Hero Arts set in Altenew Forest Green Crisp Dye ink and used a circle from Pinkfresh Studio's Mini slimline Essentials die set.  Added the die cut circle over the Holly leaves and finished with some dark green dots. 

Still two pieces of the background to make into cards.  

Stress Free Cardmaking Summit - Oct 25

 Got a few hours this afternoon to watch some more sessions of the SFCS - I watched Justine Hovey's Live presentation - on replay as it was too early in the day for me - and played along with her.   And then watch Juliana Michaels session - using precise smooshing.   All just using 5 items!

Justine did some masking and ink blending to make a lovely clean looking one layer card - I followed her placement of the masking stripes as I liked the design. 

I chose to use a green/blue background - blending with Altenew inks - Mountain Mist, Volcano Lake and Lagoon.   I used Mint tape to mask off areas to stay white.   Then stamped two flowers from an older CASual Friday stamp set called Pretty Posies.  I then stamped and fussy cut from masking paper before blending.  Used Emerald ink with a 2009 Hero Arts background stamp (Antique Background) to add some extra texture.  Once I removed the masking, I added some little sentiments from Altenew's Sentiment Strips 2.  And finished with some iridescent drops from Pinkfresh Studio.

My second card is more of a mixed media card - inspired by Juliana's session.  Included using a couple of homemade ink smooshers.   I already had a flat one, but made the bubble wrap one.  

Very different from my first card today.   I used light blue and purple inks to make my smooshed background.   Use the light blue with the flat smoosher and the bubble wrap one with the purple ink.   I then used a stencil from Ranger to added the purple.  Splatters of black, white and blackberry acrylic paints (Dina Wakely paints).  My focal butterfly is from Memory Box and I used an Ultramarine ink to smoosh the bottom layer.  I used Catherine Pooler Grass Green and Eucalyptus inks to smoosh onto white card and then die cut two of the leaves from Pinkfresh Studio Curvy Leaves die set.  Added the leaves behind the butterfly and added a teeny tiny sentiment - stamped with black and a Mama Elephant stamp set.  Added some holographic dots to finish.

Had a great afternoon crafting.  Can't wait to finish watching the summit presentations. 

One die - two different cards

I'm back... we had the most amazing 12 days with Emma, Andrew, Archer and Finlay... full of adventures. Went to Kings Park on King's Birthday Monday holiday and saw the wild flowers and watched the 21 gun salute... Boy was it loud!   Visited Caversham Wildlife Park, which was awesome- patted Kangaroos, saw Koala in trees, farm animals and lots of amazing birds and other wildlife.  Spent a day at the Royal Perth Show - animals, watched Polo Cross, and the kids had rides and played on the side shows.   Lots of playgrounds visited, watched Finn's swimming class.  Took an adventure into the city with Archie to see the Dinosaurs Alive exhibition and did a tour of the Perth Mint.  Visited two of the Giants in Mandurah for the day.  And took Archie to play Mini Golf, 10 pin bowling and spend some time in the Arcade!  All in all, a busy but fun time. 

So after 2 weeks no crafting... I managed to spend some time in the craft room this afternoon.   While I was away I purchased Crafting Inspiration #9 magazine.  It came with some Crafters Companion goodies - a stamp set, a die, an embossing folder and a stencil.   Today I CASED a card from the magazine - changing up the colours mostly...

I chose a grey-blue card for my base.  I die cut the little square die and trimmed it into three pieces.  I layered them onto a panel the same colour as the card base and added white strips down each side.  I die cut an oval for the focal point to sit on.   I stamped the vase and orange tree from the stamp set and coloured with markers and fussy cut it.   Added to the oval and finished with a little white embossed sentiment from the set.

I love the look of splitting the die into three and adding to the card so decided to try it for a Christmas card.

I die cut the square from gold card and trimmed it into three pieces and added to a red panel.  Added this to the white base and then added a focal image of a Poinsettia.  This is a Hero Arts stamp which I gold embossed onto white and dark green card.  I fussy cut the centre part of the white one and after fussy cutting the green one, layered it on top.  Cut some dots from the same gold card and added to the card. 

As first one was the first time using these dies and stamps, I am adding it to the October NBUS challenge. 

With Sympathy

 Last weekend my team lead at work, lost her Mum.   She had been ill for a while but it is still sad when your Mum passes.   The team wanted a card for all of our team and the other team (both teams work together) to all sign.  

I decided I needed to make a slightly bigger card - 5.5" x 8" card so there was space for all the expressions of sympathy and condolences.

I made the card very CAS - using Altenew Fairy Tale Floras which I stamped and black embossed.  I used the matching simple colouring stencils with some pink and green inks.   The sentiment is from a Hero Arts set which is my favourite to use for sympathy cards.   Ran a gold paint pen around the edge of the panel.   

Always sad to have to make this sort of card. 

Card Maker Success Summit - Inspired by Nicki Baxley

 Well the best made plans of mice and men..... My idea to watch more sessions last night were scuttled by the internet doing down last night-  No wifi in the house and no service from the local cell tower... so I had to wait till today to re-watch Nicki Baxley's Easel card session and have a go.   It was a labour of love... made a few mistakes and had to redo my embossed panels a couple of times...but in the end made it!

Nicki's Easel card is a bit different from how I've done them before, but turned out awesome.  Looks like a normal card till it's opened.    I liked her use of green and red card I went with the same colour scheme.  I took an Altenew embossing folder - Beautiful Begonia for my background.   I added some Altenew Vineyard Berry and Berrylicious inks to the edges.  My floral focus is a Hero Arts Vintage Poinsettia stamp and it's matching die. I stamped it with Versafine Onyx Black ink and clear embossed.  I used an idea I saw on a video by Jo Simmons, made my own stencils for adding some ink blending.  Stamped it twice and cut out the whole image and then just the cut out the flower part.  Used that as a mask to ink up the leaves and then used the second negative piece to ink blend the flower before die cutting out the coloured image.  Added some gold pen around the edge and added some Zig Glue and added some gold foil in the centre of the poinsettia.  The stopper is made with a Joy die from Chloes Creative Cards - a freebie from a magazine. I added a little sub-sentiment  from a Kaisercraft stamp set. 

As I used a Woodblock stamp for this card, I'm entering it into the Woodblock Wednesday Challenge...

Will be working on more of the sessions over the next few weeks.  Slowly building up the Christmas cards.  

Sending lots of Love.

 My sister-in-law is going through a horrid time health-wise at the moment.   Not good news for her... so I made her a card to let her know we are thinking of her and sending her prayers. 

This card was inspired by a You Tube video from Natasha Foote - I masked off the panel and used some Distress Oxide inks with a torn edge scrap to make the blending.  Once the ink dried, I added some glue (Tombow Mono Multi) - Natasha used a Zig glue pen, but of course, I couldn't find mine till after the I finsihed the card.  I let the glue go tacky and then add some silver foil.  You just rub the foil over the glue - works a charm!  I stamped the Hero Arts Poppy stamp on the card and then onto some white scrap.  I clear embossed both stampings.  Used the Distress Oxide colours to add colour to the second stamping and fussy cut the poppy flower and the leaves and added them over the other stamped image.  Added some black dots and some foiled dots on the flower.   I unfortunately dropped my ink pad and got a splotch on my panel so had to cut it down a bit.   But it turned out ok.   Added as stamped sentiment. 

Christmas in July... Two cards with circles, dots and spots

 Do you know that there is a Christmas Card Makers Success Summit starting at the end of July - it's free but you can purchase the VIP pass and get to watch the tutorials straight away.   And that's what I did! 

I watched the tutorial from Ardyth Percy-Robb - which showed how to use a gel plate to get some gorgeous papers and how turn them into Christmas cards.  For my card I CASE'd Ardyth's example card, just using some different stencils and colours. 

I used a Hero Arts stencil called Crossing Waves.  I added some red paint to my gel plate and added the stencil.  I let the paint dry on the plate and then layered with some gold paint and added another paper. Once it dried I took my pull and this is what I got.   It took a few goes to get something I liked... but got there.  I used a circle die from Gina K Master Layouts 3 to make my ornament.  I used some of my roll off papers to cut the gold topper and the Merry Christmas die (both from a magazine freebie set)  For my background, I swinked some Catherine Pooler Juniper Mist onto some card.   I found a Memory Box stencil (Diamonds) that I used some texture paste to add in the corners.   I thought my background was dry but obviously not... it picked up the ink and coloured the paste.   Added some white dots of Posca paint and white gel pen and finished with some homemade star dots.  

I am adding this to latest Christmas Kickstart Challenge #100 - Merry Go Around.   Use spots, dots and circles-

And while I was in the mood for Christmas cards I made a second card for the challenge...

I used Altenew Wonderful Wreath stencil to make a half circle wreath - with two Altenew green inks - Sweet Leaf and Just Green.  I moved the stencil three times to get the three layers of leaves.  I stenciled the red berry circles, but after making a bit of a boo-boo so changed them to use circular red gems for the berries.  I used some off the left over red roll off from my previous card, covered with some clear packing tape to die cut the Hero Arts Peace stamp and cut set.  The sub-sentiment was stamped directly to the card.  Matted with some dark green card. 

Slowly building up the Christmas stash.  

Woodblock Wednesday - June 2025

 It's been a wet winter's day today, so after doing the housework I spent some time in my craft room... doing some DT work, and do my July swap card for my NZ swap group.  Carol published the challenge early so we could get spend some time this cold weekend doing crafting... 

I also decided to play along at Woodblock Wednesday challenge.

I used 4 woodblock stamps to make this project.   A Hampton Arts Stamp (dated 2001) called Large Negative Plate - stamped with Catherine Pooler It's a Girl ink,  Hero Arts Old French Writing (dated 2002) randomly stamped in Altenew Gray Denim ink, Penny Black Blush (dated 2006) inked in Onyx Black Versafine ink as was the Stampin' Up sentiment from Ward Wood (dated 2006)  I spritzed and splattered some Distress Spritz in Fossilised Amber and Picked Raspberry.  Die cut the panel and the backing pink panel from Altenew's Mix and Match Frames.  

Catching up.... last card from last weekend

This card was inspired by my crafty friend, Carol (CarolG ... creates (creationsnz)_  She recently did some cards using some of the "Gorjuss Girls" stamps and it reminded me I have a couple of them.   Mine are a bit bigger versions than Carol's stamps... but it was fun to get them out as I've had them for around 12 years!

This little stamp is called Bear Skin... It has a little squirrel next to her, but I masked it off so I could just get the little girl.   I stamped and cut with the Scan'n'Cut and used Altenew Alcohol Markers to olour her.   I made a background panel by stamping Your Next Stamp Large Splatter with Altenew Soft Lilac ink and added some gold dots with a gold pen. I then ink blended around the edges using the residual ink on my purple blending brush.  I matted it with some dark card from Scrapbook.com Purples Smooth cardstock. The sentiment is from an older Hero Arts set - All Occasions Stamp set.   

CAS at Sweet Stampin' Challenge.

 It's time to share my latest card for our challenge at Sweet Stampin' Challenge   Our challenge this fortnight is CAS (Clean and Simple)

I had fun making this CAS (albeit two layers) card.   I used some linen look card and trimmed to just smaller than my A2(5.5"x 4.25") base.  I used my new Couture Creations score-board to add some embossed lines.   I used some of the printed vellum I made earlier this month, to die cut Birch Press Prime Peony Duo Contour Layers die.  I used my new Sticky Specks micro dot adhesive to layer together.  I'm loving this new to me adhesive.  Makes it easy to stick things together.   I used an older Hero Arts stamp set - All Occasion sentiments to stamp the sentiment with some Altenew Grey Denim Crisp ink.

Shaker fun at Die Cut Divas

When I first started stamping most of my purchases were from Hero Arts.  I have A LOT of their older stamps and dies.  And today is highlighting one I got a year or so ago. Floral Poppy and it's coordinating die

I stamped and embossed the poppy stamp and used some watercolour paint pens to add the colours.  I die cut it with the matching die.  I chose some pretty patterned paper for the background and used a couple of dies from a Cottage Cutz oval die set to cut the aperture and the matching gold frame.  I used some 3D tape and added the panel over some pink sequins.  I stamped a very old Hero Arts sentiment from All Occasions stamp set before adding the poppy.

I'm not a great fan of shaker cards so don't make them that often.  But quite happy with the results of this one.

It's been awhile!

 Well it seems like forever since I last posted.   Life has taken over.... Work has been busy, and I've been decluttering and packing up my craft room - We are getting the whole house re-carpeted. It won't be for a few more weeks till it happens but as I need take everything out of the room, I decided to purge my stash as well.   It's been slow going!   Lots of boxes of stuff in the garage.   I have been a bit crafty - made an explosion box card for my friend, Pearl, for her Mum's 90th

And the last two Sunday's Grace and Florence have stayed while Mum and Dad went to Puppy Training with Coco.   Both days Grace and I crafted.   She has taken a liking to try to replicate cards I've made and in particular loving to stamp and stencil cards.  I forgot to take a pic of last weeks, but today I remembered.   This week she wanted to use Altenew Ambridge Rose stamp and stencils.  

She picked out her own colours - first one used pinks and purples inks from Altenew and Neon Hero Arts inks for the second one.   The backgrounds were made using a "smooshing tool" )see this video from Natalie Bowers on how to make the tool!)  It's a great way to smoosh without too much mess.  Grace had such fun making the backgrounds. 

A fun afternoon had by one happy 5 year old.  The other little one has a cool time playing with Pop - and eating lots of watermelon!
